Thanksgiving options for volunteers and those looking for meals

On a day centered around a big meal, no one should have to think about where their Thanksgiving meal is coming from. Every Meals on Wheels program offers an option of receiving frozen or cold meals in advance so that clients will have a meal available on Thanksgiving and the days following it. A number of our programs also deliver hot meals on Thanksgiving.

We also receive many requests for hot meals specifically on Thanksgiving, and requests for volunteer opportunities as well! Below are some options if you’re looking for a hot meal delivered specifically on Thanksgiving, or a way to give back before you give thanks.

If you’re looking for meals

Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels
This program is independent of Meals on Wheels programs that provide regular meals and they only deliver meals once a year on Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels prepares meals consisting of turkey, dressing, potatoes, peas, corn, cranberries, rolls, pumpkin pie and milk for families in need and delivers those meals to their homes on Thanksgiving Day. This service is available to all who need it – not just seniors. If you are interested in receiving Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels you can contact them at 651-699-5404 anytime after November 1.

Other hot meal options
If you are already getting meals from one of the following programs, you can get a hot Thanksgiving meal: CES Meals on Wheels and TRUST Meals on Wheels. If you are a member of these programs, you can ask to get a hot meal on Friday: Wilder Foundation and TRUST Meals on Wheels.

If you’re looking to help

Walk to End Hunger
If you want to give back on Thanksgiving, but you want to do it in a fun way that gets the whole family involved, then the Walk to End Hunger is the perfect option for you. The Walk to End Hunger is a family friendly 5k walk that takes place at the Mall of America on Thanksgiving morning. All of the proceeds raised from this event will go back to charitable organizations in the Twin Cities working to fight hunger. You can pledge to walk for Meals on Wheels here. This event is a great way to give back before you give thanks.

Volunteer options
The CES Meals on Wheels neighborhood site in Minneapolis is still looking for a few delivery drivers on Thanksgiving Day. You can sign up to deliver by calling 612-870-1125. You can volunteer with Thanksgiving Meals on Wheels by either assembling the food that will be given to those in need, or by driving and delivering the meals. Also if you aren’t interested in walking in the Walk to End Hunger, you can volunteer at the Walk to End Hunger. They are looking for volunteers to perform a variety of tasks either Wednesday night before the event or the day of.

If you think that you or a loved one would benefit from receiving regular meals throughout the year you can sign up on our website. You can also sign up to become a regular Meals on Wheels volunteer on our website. Volunteering for Meals on Wheels can be done as often or as little as you like.
